TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – University of Florida senior Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) and freshman Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) won their respective singles matches in straight sets today on the first day of action at the 2001 Lady Seminole Classic held at Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
Lehnhoff, who is ranked No. 7 in the country and the No. 1 seed in the 32- player Flight A singles draw, topped Auburn’s Carolina Ramirez 6-2, 6-0.
“Jessica wasn’t playing as aggressively as she should have in the beginning of the match, but picked up her intensity later,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “This was her first singles match since the NCAA Tournament last year and she played okay for her first match of the season.”
Gordon, who last week won the adidas Invitational Flight B title in her collegiate debut and is the No. 6 seed, defeated South Florida’s Natalie Schwartz 6-2, 6-3.
“Alexis was a bit tentative on her forehand side, which is the side she likes to be offensive with, but she served well and competed pretty well,” Thornqvist said.
Lehnhoff paired with Gordon as the No. 1 seed in the 16-team Flight A doubles draw and the Gator duo downed TCU’s Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez 8-2 to advance to the semifinals.
Play resumes on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
