MTen Wins Seven of Nine in Singles at SEC Indoor

Magallan, Florida’s lone seeded player for the event, won his opener, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brandon Nicholson of LSU. Next up for Magallan is his teammate, Chris McDonald of Gainesville, in the second round. McDonald was a 6-4, 6-4 opening round singles winner over Troy Atkinson of South Carolina.
Levant posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Carl Wermee of South Carolina but has a daunting second round match in 15th ranked Romain Ambert of Mississippi State. The only tougher second round draw in the entire field is that of Gator Ross Greenstein, a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Rodrigo Pacheco of South Carolina today. Greenstein will face eighth-ranked and top-seeded Brandon Wagner of Georgia on Friday morning. Florida’s other winners were Matt Behrmann, Hamid Mirzadeh and Gainesville’s Trey Johnson. Troy Hahn and Ryan Sherry dropped their first round matches.
In doubles play Thursday night, Gator teams posted a 2-3 mark but both of those wins came from the Levant-Magallan tandem. The two first defeated Atkinson and David Nelson of South Carolina 8-2 in the first round before beating Mississippi State’s Luiz Carvalho and Jerome LeBelicard, 8-4, in the Round of 16. The teams of Behrmann-Sherry and third-seeded McDonald-Mirzadeh both lost in the first round. Greenstein and Hahn had their opening round opponents withdraw but in the Round of 16 fell, 8-3, to Ambert and Rene-Charles Combette of Mississippi State, the draw’s #8 seed.
The seven remaining singles entrants and the Levant-Magallan doubles team will continue play on Friday in Lexington.
