Freshman Adam Sioui took first place in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:38.64, and Florida notched seven other top-five finishes Friday to end Day One of the 20th annual Dallas Morning News Classic in third place with 140 points. Tennessee is in the lead with 159 points, followed by the University of California in second with 153 points.
Gators Mike Jansen, Ian Chadsey, Hendrik Odendaal and Carlos Jayme combined to finish fourth in the 400-yard medley relay, clocking in at 3:20.20. In the 400-yard individual medley, UF's Eric Donnelly finished third in the championship final (3:56.54), while Duncan Sherrard finished seventh in the consolation final with a time of 3:56.08.
Jayme also took third place in the championship final of the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.42, and Odendaal finished 11th with a time of 20.88 in the consolation final. In one-meter diving action, Zach Wilcox placed fourth with a score of 274.50.
Other top finishers for Florida included Sherrard, who grabbed third place in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 49.73, and the second-place 800-yard freestyle relay team of Jayme, Sioui, Gabriel Mangabeira and Sherrard, who finished the event with a time of 6:40.03.
In other action, the University of California set three new meet records. Olympic gold medallist
Anthony Irvin's recorded a time of 19.46 in the 50 free, breaking the meet record set by former UCLA standout Tom Jager of 20:00. Irvin's time also bettered the pool record set by Jager as well in 1985 of 19.85. Cal's Alex Lim then broke both the meet and pool record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.62, records that were previously held by Texas' Neil Walker set in 1997. Cal ended the night with its third meet record, as the 800 free relay team of Joe Bruckhart, Mattias Ohlin, Bayani Flores, and Matt
Macedo broke Florida's 1998 time of 6:36.97 with a new meet record time of 6:36.24.
