Doubles Team Of Hahn and Behrmann Advances At ITA
Friday, October 11, 2002 | Men's Tennis
Florida's Troy Hahn and Matt Behrmann teamed up to advance into the round of 16 as rain forced opening main draw play indoors Thursday at the Icy Hot/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's All-American Championships.
In all, the Gators had two individuals and a pair of doubles team in action. However, Hahn and Behrmann were the only ones to come away with a victory as they defeated brothers Brandon and Kevin Gill of Butler, 8-3, to take on Johan Brunstrom and Henrik Soderberg of SMU at 8 p.m. this evening for a trip to the quarterfinals.
Olivier Levant and Eleazar Magallan also competed in doubles, but dropped their match to sixth-seeded Robert Kowalczyk and Balazs Veress of California, 8-5. Levant and Magallan are currently in action in the doubles consolation bracket against Ryan Haymond and Alastair Jenkin of Texas.
In all, thirteen of the top 16 seeds in singles picked up wins today to advance to Friday's second round. Hahn and Levant were both in action for the Gators. Hahn was defeated by fourth-seeded Amer Delic of Illinois (7-6(1); 6-4). He will play Chad Harris of Vanderbilt in Friday's consolation singles bracket. Levant was defeated in his match as well as he suffered a 6-3, 6-2 set back to South Carolina's Angelo Niculescu. Levant will play Karim Benmansour of Kentucky in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
In the event of inclement weather on Friday, play will be moved indoors again. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the singles and doubles finals.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships is the first of three national championship tournaments for collegiate tennis during the 2002-03 season. The two other tournaments (for singles and doubles only) are the Omni Hotels/ITA National Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
