Women's Swim & Dive Upsets Georgia 137-106

Freshman Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) broke the school record in the 200-yard breaststroke as the No. 3 University of Florida women's swimming and diving team defeated second-ranked Georgia 137-106 Saturday afternoon at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.
Bernhardt swam an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:11.74 in the 200-yard breaststroke, breaking the a Florida school record of 2:12.73 set by Cindy Ounpuu in 1986. Bernhardt also won the 200-yard individual medley with an NCAA provisional time of 2:02.35.
Freshman Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.) swam her first automatic qualifying time of the season, winning the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.51. Reid also swam a provisional time of 2:03.43 in the 200-yard IM. Junior Sara McLarty (Deland, Fla.) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:45.06 and finished with her third automatic qualifying time in the event. McLarty also swam a career-best, winning time of 9:36.79 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and finished second in the 200-yard IM with a provisional time of 2:02.91.
Two relay teams also swam NCAA provisional qualifying times for the Gators. The winning 400-yard freestyle relay team of senior Diane Tennison (Lafayette, La.), freshman Marietta Uhle (Sankt, Ingbert, Germany), junior Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) finished with a season-best, provisional time of 3:22.80. The 400-yard medley relay team consisting of Reid, Bernhardt, senior Cara Teague (Sugar Land, Texas) and Tennison finished second with a provisional time of 3:41.16.
The Gators recorded three NCAA automatic qualifying times and 14 NCAA provisional times. In the 200-yard freestyle Gibney , senior Anna Chapman (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and Uhle each swam provisional times. In the 200-yard butterfly three Gators swam provisional times including: sophomore Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.), Teague and junior Casey Seland (Longwood, Fla.). Farrell had two qualifying times as she finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.39) and third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.09). Chapman and sophomore Meredith Green each provisionally qualified in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.34 and 4:48.15, respectively.
Junior diver Nicole Bolt (Orlando, Fla.) won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events with scores of 290.78 and 289.80, respectively. Freshman diver Jessica Ranieri (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) finished second on the one-meter (268.50) and third on the three-meter springboard (269.85).
