Sunday, February 24, 2002 | Men's Tennis
Unlike in Friday’s narrow loss at No. 14 Texas A&M, Florida captured the doubles point to open today’s match. A win at the No. 1 position by Chris McDonald and Hamid Mirzadeh, along with a 9-7 victory at No. 3 by Matt Behrmann and Troy Hahn gave the Gators the advantage heading into the singles competition.
In singles, a pair of Gators won in straight sets to put the team up. Eleazar Magallan was a 6-3, 6-4 winner for UF at No. 2 while Hahn captured a victory at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3. Mirzadeh topped Rice’s William Barker at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 while Olivier Levant added a win at No. 3 by a 3- 6, 6-3, 6-4 final tally. The two Owl wins came by narrow and identical 1- 6, 7-6, 7-6 scores at No. 5 and No. 6.
Florida returns to action on Friday when the Gators open SEC play by hosting No. 6 Ole Miss at 4:00 pm.
