Sunday, February 3, 2002 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The Lady Gators extended a perfect record against Tennessee while the men were unable to upset the No. 4 Vols at the Student Aquatic Center on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Florida women defeated the Lady Vols 128-112 while the men fell 129-110.
The No. 6 Lady Gators extended their undefeated mark to 18-0 all-time over Tennessee, improving their record to 5-3, 4-2 SEC for the season. UF decimated UT early taking a 55-point victory by the first diving break. Florida scored 11 top-three finishes in just five events, including winning all of the first three spots in the 50-yard freestyle. In her final road dual meet, senior Leah Martindale (St. James, Barbados) won the event (23.69) with sophomore Jaime Ellis (Spring, Texas) in second (24.36) and junior Diane Tennison (Lafayette, La.) in third.
After the break, Florida then racked up eight top-three finishes and won another three events. Freshman Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) took first in the 200-yard Butterfly (1:59.00) and sophomore Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland) posted another victory in the 100-yard Freestyle (51.31). Tennessee broke up the UF winning streak by claiming wins with Jamie Sanger on the one-meter springboard (298.57) and Valerie Conte in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.83).
The men faced a more difficult opponent in the No. 4 Tennessee men. Overall, Florida has struggled against Tennessee posting a 10-19 record. The Gators have however posted a 5-4 record against top-25 teams this season and did place higher in the SEC East Invitational in October. The Gators were unable to overcome the Vols and fallt to 9-3, 5-3 SEC for the season.
Senior Eric Donnelly (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) both scored strong early finishes to help Florida to hang in the fight. Donnelly placed second in the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.52) while Jayme took runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle (20.48). The Vols seemed unstoppable as they won all five of the first session events going up 63-30 by the first diving break.
The men then rallied to win for the first time of the day, and then added two more. The first victory came from freshman diver Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) on the one-meter springboard (328.12). Jayme then captured the first swimming win in the 100-yard freestyle (45.00) and senior Mike Jansen (Wellington, Fla.) score the third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:46.27).
The heated Gator comeback would soon be stifled when the UT won all three of the top places in the 500-yard freestyle. The Gators would add two more wins with junior Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.63), the final individual event of the day. Their final win was in the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jim Kostowicz (Longwood, Fla.), Jayme, Odendaal and Gabriel Mangabeira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) (1:20.98).
Both Gator teams will return home for their final dual meet of the season when they take on Florida Atlantic in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. Special ceremonies have been planned to honor the seniors and their final performance at home as a Gator. Admission is free to the public and doors will open at approximately 11:30 a.m.
