#14 Men's Tennis Beats Vanderbilt, 4-3
Monday, March 18, 2002 | Men's Tennis
“We’ve had a nice start and I feel that this is the match that I feel best about all season,” UF head coach Andy Jackson said. “Sometimes it’s hard to see that from the score and the ranking of the opponent but this is the one that we feel the best about and we’re excited.”
The match started inauspiciously for Florida as the team lost the doubles point for the first time since Feb. 22 and only the third time in its 12 matches this season. Eleazar Magallan and Greenstein earned the lone Florida victory with their 8-6 win at No. 3. The matches began outdoors but were moved indoors during their latter stages due to rain in Nashville. UF’s loss at No. 2 by Matt Behrmann and Troy Hahn snapped a five-match winning streak for the tandem.
In singles action, the depth of Florida’s lineup proved critical as the Gators won in straight sets at No. 3-6 to overcome their doubles point loss and claim the 4-3 victory. Olivier Levant improved to 9-2 in dual match singles with his 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 3, Matt Behrmann posted a win at No. 4 and Trey Johnson was a winner for the Gators at No. 5. The win was Johnson's 20th of the year overall after winning seven as a freshman in 2001.
Coupled with #28 Bobby Reynolds’ win at No. 1 for the Commodores, the match stood 3-2 Florida but at No. 6 Greenstein smoothly defeated Josh Tarkoff, 6-4, 6-2 to seal the Gators 10th win of the year. Play concluded with VU’s Chad Harris topping Magallan, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6.
The Gators return to action on Saturday, March 23 when they host rival Florida State at 2:00 pm. Please note that the date of that match has been changed from the original schedule.
