Vanderbilt (SEC First Round)
Men's Tennis Shuts Out Vandy in SEC Opener
Friday, April 19, 2002 | Men's Tennis
Matt Behrmann won the clinching match, his 10th consecutive win overall, as the No. 8 Florida men's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 win over Vanderbilt in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament on Thursday night at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts in Knoxville. Florida ups its record to 16-5 on the year with the win while Vanderbilt drops to 10- 13.
"We were pushed and tested severely by Vanderbilt tonight," UF head coach Andy Jackson said. "We expected that though. They are a tough team but we were able to squeek it out."
Florida opened the match by taking the doubles point, a key component to many of Vanderbilt's wins this year. Matt Behrmann and Troy Hahn steam- rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 3 for the Gators. Florida sealed the doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 2 by Olivier Levant and Eleazar Magallan. The team broke serve at 3-3 and maintained control of the match for the win. With the point sealed, he match at No. 1 was then suspended while tied at 5-5.
Florida took the first two singles matches off the courts before the remaining were suspended with the Gator clinch. Vanderbilt did not threaten in either of the completed matches. Troy Hahn was first off the courts as he needed 1:16 to complete his 6-2, 6-1 win over Scott Brown at No. 4. Olivier Levant followed shortly there after as he completed a 6-4, 6-0 win over Zach Dailey at No. 3. Levant broke serve tied 4-4 in the first set and did not lose another game.
Behrmann led 3-0 in the third set at No. 5 when Jens Fredricksen was forced to retire after pulling a muscle in his back, an inuury that developed during the second set. At the time of the suspension, Magallan led 5-1 in the third set of his match at No. 2, Trey Johnson trailed Josh Tarkoff at No. 6 and Hamid Mirzadeh was up a set on No. 17 Bobby Reynolds at the top spot.
It is also Florida's first shutout win of the year, preventing this from being the first season since 1994 in which UF did not blank an opponent.
The Gators advance to face #4 seed Tennessee on Friday at 5:00 pm. The Gators fell to the Vols, 6-1 on April 5. Surprisingly, Florida has only once previously faced the SEC Tournament host, defeating Vanderbilt, 5-2, during the 1992 tournament in Nashville.
