Women's Track Wins SEC Quad, Men Take Second

The University of Florida women's track team won the 2002 outdoor SEC Quad Meet with a total of 190 points. The Gator men's team finished second in its meet with a total of 191 points. In all, the women's team had wins in six events today enroute to the eight-point win over South Carolina. The men's team had five winners and finished second to Tennessee. The meet was run on a sunny but chilly day in Knoxville.
The Gator women were led by sweeping places one through four in the pole vault, places one through three in the shot put and the top two spots in the 800 meters. UF had three provisional qualifiers in the meet.
Megan Westfall won the pole vault in 12-3.5 to lead the Gators. Ana Salzano also cleared 12-3.5 but had more misses to finish second. Chandra Lacombe was third and Stephanie Hood was fourth with heights of 11-9.75. Candice Scott, the winner of the hammer throw last night, won the shot put with a mark of 51-11.25. Erin Gilreath was second at 47-11. LaQuanda Cotton took a close third at 47-10.5.
Kristina Bratton and Melissa DeLeon were both provisional qualifiers for the Gators with their times in the 800 meters. Bratton won in 2:06.84 and DeLeon was second in 2:07.24. Norma Vega won the 1,500m run for the Gators in a time of 4:34.29.
Other winners for Florida included Krystle Moss (5-6) in the high jump and in the women's triple jump, Yolanda Thompson was first with a mark of 40-6.25. Amber Robinson was second in the 100 meters. She had a provisional time of 11.55.
The men's team was led by five winners in the meet. UF also had two provisional qualifiers.
Joe Squittieri finished first in the high jump with a height of 6-11. Matt Vincent also cleared 6-11, but had more misses at lower heights and finished second. Triple Jumper Erik Newby was first with a mark of 49-3.75. Newby was fourth in the long jump last night.
Discus thrower Ryan McIntyre achieved a provisional qualifying mark and won the event. McIntyre's distance of 182-9 is a personal best.
Chris Duncan pulled a double win on the day. Duncan won the 3,000 meters in 8:34.37. He then came back and won the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:59.06. Steve Zieminski was third in the steeplechase with a time of 9:28.31.
In the men's 400m race, Rickey Harris was third with a provisional qualifying time of 46.00. Freshman Stefan Pastor was fourth with a personal best 47.61. Running in his first open quarter mile this season, Ahmad Jasmine was seventh in 47.91.
Both Gator teams travel to Arizona State next weekend for the Sun Angel Classic on Saturday, April 13.
