#10 Men's Tennis Falls at #1 Georgia, 5-2
Sunday, April 7, 2002 | Men's Tennis
The match began in fine fashion for Florida as the team swept all three doubles matches. The sweep included a pair of ranked wins as the Gators’ Chris McDonald and Hamid Mirzadeh knocked off 18th ranked Matias Boeker and Bo Hodge, 8-5 at No. 1 while Olivier Levant and Eleazar Magallan took care of 33rd ranked Brandon Wagner and Adam Seri, 8-6, at No. 2. The third leg of the sweep came from Matt Behrmann and Troy Hahn’s 8-4 win at No. 3. Of Florida’s 13 doubles point wins this year, it is only the second time UF would go on to lose the match, joining a 4-3 loss at No. 7 Kentucky on March 15.
The wins did not come as freely in singles play where Georgia won at every position except for No. 5 to take the match. UGA used wins from four of the nation’s top 69 players to produce wins at the No. 1 through No. 4 positions. The Gators got their lone victory when Behrmann posted a straight sets win, 7-5, 6-3, over Nicolas Boeker at No. 5. The win is Behrmann's seventh in a row and improves his record to 22-9 on the year and 12-3 in dual matches.
Florida returns home next weekend to wrap up the regular season. The Gators host No. 13 Duke on Friday, April 12 at 4:00 pm and No. 24 South Carolina on Sunday, April 14 at 1:00 pm. The SEC Championships will be played the following weekend, from April 18-21, at Tennessee.
