USF vs. Miami (NCAA 1st Round)
USF Defeats Miami in NCAA First Round
Saturday, May 11, 2002 | Men's Tennis
USF won the doubles point to open the match. Dan McCain and Martin Wetzel posted a 8-6 win at No. 2 while Jorge Escallon and Nadim Naser secured the point three minutes later with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Hurricanes quickly evened the score at 1-1 in singles play when Todd Widom topped Wetzel, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. USF captured the next three matches off the courts though to secure the team victory. At No. 6, Escallon led 6-5 in the first set of his match but broke serve to avoid a tiebreaker and did not lose another game as he rolled to a 7-5, 6-0 win over Maxime LePivert. Seconds later Uli Kiendl completed a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Jose Lieberman when the Miami player double faulted on Kiendl's second match point. Antelo wrapped up the Bull victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Tomas Smid, gaining match point with a service winner as Smid's return sailed long.
Maimi's Andrew Golub held a 3-0 third set lead at No. 3 when play was suspended while the Hurricane's Tarik El Bassiouni won his opening set at No. 5, 6-4, and was tied 5-5 in the second with Naser when play was halted.
"We played them before in Miami (April 6) and won 4-3, and we knew it would be a tough match," said South Florida Head Coach Don Barr. "Coming out and winning the doubles point was key. The singles matches were really close, so the doubles point was very important. I think we'll be more relaxed tomorrow. Our A game will be there, and it'll need to be."
"South Florida played great," said Miami Head Coach Jay Berger. "It was a great match. They just beat us."
USF advances to face the winner of this afternoon's match between Florida and Georgia State on Sunday at noon. The winner of that match will advance to the NCAA Round of 16, next Saturday at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
