No. 6 Men's Swim & Dive Second At Dallas Classic

The No. 6 University of Florida men's swimming and diving team is in second-place with 157 points after the first day of competition Friday night at the Dallas Morning News Classic. The Gators trail only No. 4 California, who is in first with 186 points in the meet held at the Perkins Natatorium on the Southern Methodist University campus.
One Gator swimmer and one relay team were crowned champions in their respective events. Sophomore Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) picked up the first win in any event in the 2002-03 season with an individual championship in the 200-yard freestyle. Sioui, who won the NCAA Championship in the same event last spring, finished with a first-place time of 1:38.75. Florida ended the first day with a bang, as the Gators' 800-yard freestyle relay team took home gold. The team of Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil), Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) and Sioui finished first with a time of 6:35.01, which set a new meet record.
UF's 400-yard medley relay team also earned some points for the team, as the Gators finished third with a time of 3:20.70. Team members included Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.), Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) and Jayme.
Lochte, a freshman, finished second in the championship final of the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 3:48.10, which was good enough for a NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark. Mangabeira was Florida's other second-place finisher in a championship final, as the sophomore took second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.74.
Behind the Bears and the Gators, Minnesota is in third with 136 points, while Arizona State is in fourth with 123. Georgia and SMU round out the field, as the Bulldogs are in fifth with 122 points and the Mustangs hold sixth-place with 113 points.
Florida's quest for the team championship in the Dallas Morning News Classic will begin again Saturday night with the final day of competition. The finals will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Perkins Natatorium.
