Holmia Comes Up Short In SEC Finals
Sunday, January 19, 2003 | Men's Tennis
University of Florida freshman Janne Holmia came up just short in his bid to win the SEC Indoor Singles Championship held in Norcross, GA on Sunday.
Holmia began the day with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Bo Hodge of Georgia. Hodge came into the weekend ranked 25th in the country and as the eighth seed in the tournament. With the win, Holmia is now 2-0 against Hodge as the two first met in the Omni Hotels Region III Championship this past fall. It was during the round of 16 at that event that Holmia defeated Hodge 7-6 (3), 6-0. In the finals, Holmia squared off against Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt, who was the third seed in the tournament and ranked eighth nationally. Holmia and Reynolds battled in the first set as Reynolds went on to win the match 7-6 (4), 6-1. It was Reynolds who Holmia faced in the Region III Championship Quarterfinals after defeating Hodge. Reynolds took the first meeting as well 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2.
Florida will begin dual match action on Thursday, Jan. 23 as it hosts Central Florida at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville at 2 p.m. The match will mark Nike Day with the first 250 fans receiving Gator Tennis bucket hats.
