No. 5 Georgia Tech fired rounds of 272 and 283 and leads a field of 15 teams at 21-under at the Cleveland Golf/Gary Koch Intercollegiate after Monday's rounds at Old Memorial Golf Course.
Arkansas (282-285 = 567) is second at nine-under, while tournament co-host Florida is third after a first round 276 (-12) and a second round 292 (+4) for a total of 568 (-8) at the par 72, 7,036-yard course. Co-host Kentucky is seventh with a two-round total of 576 (E) after shooting 285 (-3) and 291 (+3).
College of Charleston's John Assey is the individual leader at nine-under after rounds of 67 (-5) and 68 (-4), while North Carolina State's Fernando Mechereffe and Georgia Tech's Nicholas Thompson are tied for second at eight-under.
Georgia Tech began the tournament on a high note by shooting a first round 272 (-16), which broke the tournament record of 273 set in 2001 by Florida. All five Yellow Jackets shot even or under par in the first round, while three matched the feat in the second round.
"The team has worked real hard all fall and they've learned some things about how to hang in there," Georgia Tech coach Bruce Heppler said. "I think today showed what we're capable of, so I was real happy with the way we played."
The Gators also fared well in the opening round, carding a 276 – the third best single round score in the tournament's history.
Florida sophomore Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) carded a first-round score of 69 (-3) and a second round 70 for a sum of 139 (-5) and is eighth entering Tuesday's final round.
Florida freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.) fired a career-best 65 in the first round – the third best score in the five-year history of the Cleveland Golf/Gary Koch Intercollegiate. He led all players in the opening round with nine birdies. He finished the day at 141 (-3) in a tie for 11th after a second round 76 (+4).
Gator senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Columbia) also fared well after shooting a two-under 70 in the first round and finishing the afternoon with a 71 (-1) to stand at 141 (-3) in a tie for 11th.
Junior Duke Butler IV (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) made his first tournament appearance as a Gator and shot a first round 72 (E) and followed with a three-over 75 to sit tied for 37th at 147.
Sophomore James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) carded a first round 74 (+2) and a second round 76 (+4) to stand in a tie for 54th at 150.
Making his first appearance of the season and playing as an individual, sophomore Ryan Cochran Paducah, Ky.) shot a 74 (+2) in the first round and a three-under 69 in the second as is tied for 18th at 143 (-1).
Teams will tee off at 8 a.m. on Wednesday for the final round at Old Memorial Golf Course.
