Men's Tennis Starts Off At All-America

Seven members of the University of Florida men's tennis team began competition on Friday in the prequalifying round of the 2003 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-America Championships in Chattanooga, TN.

After two rounds of completed play, three Gators had moved into the Round of 64, which will be played tomorrow. Meanwhile, Jordan Dolberg's second round match was still in action late Friday night.

Florida Chris Brandi opened the day with a win over Arizona State's Jon Stott (6-3, 6-2) before going on to take down Ohio State's Dennis Mertens (7-5, 6-2). Teammate Martin Stiegwardt defeated Ivan D'Argence Arceo of Indiana State (6-3, 6-2). In the round of 128, Stiegwardt picked up a victory over Michigan State's Chirs Mitchell (6-4, 6-3). UF's Vlad Obradovic also made it through the first day as he defeated Arizona State's Ryan McBride (6-3, 6-2). Friday evening he defeated East Tennessee State's Diego Iglesis, 6-0 6-3.

The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships include 256-singles player and 128-doubles team prequalifying tournaments played October 3-6 which feed into 64-player and 32-doubles team qualifying tournaments October 7-8. The 64-player, 32-doubles team main draw takes place Oct. 9-12.

Action resumes tomorrow in the singles prequalifying rounds and begins for the doubles as well. UF has three teams entered in doubles play.
