Gators Begin Play At Indoor Championships

University of Florida men's tennis All-Americans Hamid Mirzadeh and Janne Holmia began play at the 2003 ITA National Intercollegiate Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Thursday as both advanced with opening round victories.
Mirzadeh, ranked eighth in the preseason ITA poll, defeated Arkansas 71st-ranked Adrians Zguns in three sets (7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-2). Mirzadeh moved on to play Duke's 38th-ranked Ludovic Walter in tomorrow's second round match. Holmia, who is ranked fifth nationally, defeated 78th-ranked Michael Rubing of Michigan in straight sets. (6-0, 6-2). Holmia will face the winner of the first round match between Nathan Price (Arkansas) and Cliff Nguyen (Harvard), which is currently being played.
The tournament is the ITA's second national tournament of 2003-04 and is taking place Nov. 6-9 at the University of Michigan.
