Holmia Advances To Semifinals At ITA Championships

Several members of the University of Florida men's tennis team were in action on Friday as All-American Janne Holmia and Hamid Mirzadeh appeared at the 2003 ITA National Intercollegiate Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., where Holmia secured a spot in Saturday's semifinal round. Meanwhile, the rest of the squad competed in the Bulldog Scramble in Athens, Ga.
Holmia battled 14th-ranked Robert Searle of Rice to three sets before earning a trip to the semifinals with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. Holmia advanced to the quarterfinal round as he began the day with a 7-6 (4), 6-2, victory over Harvard's Cliff Nguyen. Holmia moved on to face Ohio State's Jeremy Wurtzman, who is ranked 20th in the country.
Junior Hamid Mirzadeh dropped his second round match as he was defeated in to sets by 38th-ranked Ludovic Walter of Duke in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0. On Thursday, Mirzadeh, opened play by defeating Arkansas' 71st-ranked Adrians Zguns in three sets (7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-2).
The rest of the Gator squad was in action at the Bulldog Scramble in Athens, GA, which got underway on Friday. The three-day event, which also includes players from Georga, Mississippi, Kentucky, Furman and Georgia Perimeter, features a round-robin format with singles and doubles.
Two of Florida's doubles teams came away with victories. UF's Vladimir Obradovic and Trey Johnson teamed to defeated Frerik Aarum and Claes Lindholm of Ole Miss, 8-4. Stefan Tell and Ryan Sherry were victorious by the same margin over Georgia's Joseph Lariscy and Trevor Wilson.
In singles play, Chris Brandi defeated Aarum, 6-3, 6-3, while Stefan Tell earned a win over Karim Alayli of Ole Miss who retired in the third set. Sherry went three sets with Georgia's Stephan Timu before coming away with the wine (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). Trey Johnson and Jordan Dolberg both had straight set wins. Johnson defeated Kevin Lacky of Furman (6-3, 6-4), while Dolberg took out Georgia's Jason Varela (6-4, 7-5).
