Holmia Drops Semifinal Match

Florida men's tennis All-American Janne Holmia came up short in his effort to reach the final match of the ITA National Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday in Ann Arbor, Michigan. At the same time, several members of the Gator squad had a solid outing at the Bulldog Scramble in Athens, GA.
Holmia faced Ohio State's 20th-ranked Jeremy Wurtzman, who was making his second straight appearance in the semifinal round at the event. Wurtzman defeated Holmia in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
In Athens, all of Florida's doubles teams came up with a win as did six of the seven Gators who played in singles matches. Stefan Tell paired with Lucas Melero of Georgia Perimeter to defeat Adam VanLoan and Ricardo Gonzalez of Georgia, 8-5. Vladimir Obradovic and Trey Johnson used the same score to take out Kentucky's Alex Hume and Matt Allinder. Martin Stiegwardt and Chris Brandi won their match against Joseph Lariscy and Trevor Wilson of Georgia, 8-2. Jordan Dolberg and Ryan Sherry battled Ben Pauluhn and Kevin Lacky of Furman before coming away with a 9-7 victory.
In singles play, Brandi defeated Allinder in straight sets (6-1, 6-0), while Sherry also won in straight sets as he defeated Pauluhn (6-4, 6-3). Dolberg was the only other UF player to end his match in two sets as he defeated VanLoan, 6-1, 7-5. Tell fell behind early in his match against Hume, however, after dropping the first set 3-6, he rallied to take the second and third by scores of 7-6 (5) and 6-4, respectively. Stiegwardt also needed to win the last two sets for the win as he pulled out a victory against Kentucky's Rahim Esmail, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Johnson rounded out the list of Florida singles winners with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, win over Georgia's Stephan Timu.
