The No. 7 University of Florida men's swimming and diving team garnered six NCAA All-American honors and one honorable mention honor Thursday night during the first day of finals at the 2003 NCAA Championships at the Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin, Texas. As a team, the Gators are in fifth place of the team standings with 81 points.
Freshman Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) grabbed two All-America honors, as he finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and as a member of the Gators' 200-yard freestyle relay team. Lochte's time of 1:44.58 in the 200 IM was the fastest time in the event for him this season and was the third fastest time in school-history.
"Ryan Lochte really swam well tonight," Head Coach Gregg Troy said. "This was an important day for him, because it was his first experience in the NCAA Championships. I was real pleased with how he kept composed and swam against some really good competition."
Joining Lochte in the 200-yard freestyle relay was Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil), Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) and Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada). The team finished seventh in the event with a time of 1:18.97.
Jayme and Mangabeira also teamed up with Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) and Philip Norris (Longwood, Fla.) in the 400-yard medley relay to finish in seventh place in a time of 3:11.72.
Jayme also took seventh in the consolation finals of the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 19.86. Overall, Jayme earned two All-America honors in both relays and one honorable mention in the 50 free.
Sophomore diver Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) finished fifth in the one-meter springboard diving competition with a score of 346.95.
The top eight place finishers earn All-America honors, while athletes that place ninth to 16th receive honorable mention status.
The second day of the NCAA Championships will begin Friday morning at 11 a.m. with the preliminaries. The finals will begin at 7 p.m.
