W-Tennis def. Ga.; Moves into 1st Place Tie in SEC
Sunday, April 6, 2003 | Women's Tennis
Florida's hopes of winning a 19th SEC women's tennis championship remained intact with Sunday's 5-2 victory over sixth-ranked Georgia at the McWhorter Courts in Athens.
The win moved the Gators (21-2, 9-1 SEC) into a tie with the Lady Bulldogs (14-2, 9-1 SEC) for first place in the SEC standings with one match remaining. Florida will try to secure at least a share of the SEC regular season title with a win next Saturday against South Carolina at the Ring Tennis Complex. That match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and admission is free. Georgia travels to 11th-ranked Tennessee in its season finale before the SEC Tournament.
"I'm real proud of our team because we knew this weekend was going to be such a tough and important two match road swing," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "Obviously, Georgia is a very good team and to beat them on their home court says a lot about our team. It's evident that our Vanderbilt loss was a huge learning experience for us. Not only are we playing with a great deal of confidence, today we played with poise along with a calmness that makes us very difficult to beat."
The key to Sunday's victory, as it has been as season, came with the talent of Florida's depth. The Gators won the doubles point behind the play of their number 2 and 3 teams, and then polished off the victory in singles claiming the numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6 positions.
