Two Women's Doubles Teams Advance at NCAAs
Wednesday, May 21, 2003 | Women's Tennis
Two doubles teams from the University of Florida advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championships.
The Gator tandems of Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes, along with the duo of Alexis Gordon and Julia Scaringe won their respective first round matches on Tuesday and continue action on Wednesday beginning at 12 Noon at the Ring Tennis Complex on the University of Florida campus.
Magley and Reyes, who are seeded among the 5 through 8 pairs in the 32-team event, will play Missouri's Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova in the round of 16, while Gordon and Scaringe meet Oregon's Courtney Nagle and Daria Panova. Magley and Reyes defeated Clemson's Laurence Jayet and Julie Coin 6-2, 6-4 in today's first round and Gordon and Scaringe took out San Diego State's Silvia Tornier and Indra Erichsen 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
UF had a third doubles team competing, but Lindsay Dawaf and Julie Rotondi lost their opening round bout to Georgia's No. 2-seeded Agata Cioroch and Lori Grey 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Dawaf also dropped her second round singles match to Northwestern's No. 2-seeded Cristelle Grier 6-3, 6-3.
Magley and Reyes continued their impressive run with today's victory over the Clemson pair, improving their season record to 34-9. Entering the NCAA Doubles Championships, Magley and Reyes had won four consecutive matches, including the last three against the No. 1, 3 and 8-ranked teams in the country.
In the NCAA first round, Magley and Reyes opened with an early break and snagged another in the fifth game to take a 4-1 lead. The next two games also were breaks, but Reyes snapped the trend and served out for the first set. The Gator duo then earned breaks in the third and fifth games of the second set before holding serve the rest of the way to close out the win.
"We're both really excited about (today's win)," Magley said. "We think we have a lot of potential to do well in the tournament and are expecting to perform at the best level possible. It's a great opportunity. The winner gets a wild card into the US Open, so we're looking forward to it. Hopefully, we'll come out on top."
Tuesday's match was the first time Magley has returned to the court since helping UF capture the NCAA team title on Sunday.
"It was kind of odd being out on the court again," Magley added. "It was like we were starting all over again. It's different because not everyone on the team is out there on the court with you. It showed me just how fun playing with a team is."
While Magley and Reyes continued their impressive pairing, Gordon and Scaringe were reunited as doubles partners for the first time since March 16, when the duo squared off against a Vanderbilt team during the dual match season. Despite the layoff, Gordon and Scaringe showed little rust against their San Diego State opponents today. The match was on-serve until UF earned a break in the 10th game to take the opening set. SDSU rallied in the second set and held serve throughout while earning breaks in the fifth and seventh games to force a deciding third set. The Gators earned a break in the fourth game of the final set and followed that with a love service game from Gordon to take a 4-1 lead. SDSU held in the next game, as did Scaringe before the Gator duo fought off one game point in the eighth game and capitalized on their first match point.
"We started off the match just trying to get comfortable with each other again. It took us a few games, but we did alright," Scaringe said. "The second set I kind of pulled my hip-flexor again like I did during the team tournament so I was just trotting along out there in the second set. In the third set we held every time and got the two breaks and there you go."
"I felt good," Gordon agreed. 'We been basically doing the same with our other partners. I just felt good today, the movement and everything. The timing was a little off at the beginning but once we played more it was fine."
