Lynda Tealer (TEA-ler), one of the nation's top athletic administrators, was named the University of Florida's Associate Athletics Director, Senior Woman Administrator, UF Athletics Director Jeremy Foley announced today. Tealer, 33, will replace UF's current Associate Athletics Director, Senior Woman Administrator Ann Marie Rogers following her retirement. Tealer joins the University Athletic Association (UAA) in July and will work alongside Rogers until Rogers' retirement in December of 2003.
"I am looking forward to becoming a part of one of the nation's best athletic programs. Florida is serious about student-athlete success, academically and athletically. The Florida program is committed to providing a wonderful experience for student-athletes as well as setting up the coaches for success," Tealer said. "To professionally be a part of that was incredibly intriguing and a very powerful draw. My visit to campus just deepened my interest in the Florida athletic program. I walked away from my visit with such a level of excitement. I have real sense of respect for what Jeremy Foley does for his institution as well as his leadership nationally. The staff was incredible – I enjoyed every single person that I met. I want to be a part of that enthusiasm. I look forward to learning from them as well as participating in what is already going at the University and hopefully I can bring some new ideas and add to that energy.
"There was a draw to Florida, but there was also a draw back to the campus environment," she continued. "To be part of student-athlete success, working with programs, being closely involved with coaches and what they are trying to accomplish – that is a big draw for me and I can't think of a better place to do that than Florida."
Tealer brings experiences as an administrator at both the conference and university levels as well as a student-athlete to the Florida program.
"We are very excited to have Lynda Tealer join the UAA. She is unquestionably one of the nation's top young talents, which is evident by her longtime presence on the NCAA Management Council. Lynda has earned a tremendous amount of respect among her peers around the country and her experience as a student-athlete, SWA and associate commissioner is invaluable. She is a good fit for our program and will work well with our coaches and staff," Foley said. "We look forward to welcoming Lynda and her family to the Gator program and the Gainesville community.
"We feel fortunate that Lynda will be able to spend so much time with Ann Marie to help her get acclimated to our program," he continued. "I'm sure Ann Marie will be able to pass a good bit of her knowledge along to Lynda during the interim period."
Tealer comes to the UAA from the Southland Conference, where she has been an Associate Commissioner since April of 2000. At the Southland Conference, Tealer served as its senior woman administrator and oversaw the league's regular season and championship competitions. She also assisted with administrative operations in addition to serving as a liaison for the coaches, championships, and senior woman administrators committees.
Prior to joining the Southland Conference, Tealer was at Santa Clara University for four years. She joined the Bronco's staff in November of 1995 as the compliance director and was elevated to SCU's Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services and senior woman administrator five months later. In July of 1999, Tealer was appointed Assistant Athletic Director for Intercollegiate Sports in addition to her senior woman administrator position. In her last position at SCU, Tealer provided program direction for the sports of men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and men's and women's cross country. In addition, she represented Santa Clara on the West Coast Conference senior woman administrators committee.
While at SCU, Tealer was named to the NCAA Division I Management Council in 1998 as the Division I-AAA at-large representative. She assumed the West Coast Conference representative position (Oct. 1999-Jan. '00) and rejoined the Council as the Southland Conference representative in January of 2001. She also is a member of the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee, a position she has held since September of 2002.
Tealer is a 1992 graduate of the University of San Diego, where she earned a degree in business administration while playing basketball four years for the Toreros. She also possesses a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, where she was a member of the Thurgood Marshall Legal Society.
