SWIMMER COMPETES IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

BARCELONA, Spain -- University of Florida sophomore Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) competed in day seven of the 2003 X FINA World Championships Saturday afternoon.
Bernhardt finished 13th in the semifinals of the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 32.42, only .43 seconds behind the eighth place qualifying spot. Bernhardt also placed 13th in the preliminaries with a time of 32.30.
Bernhardt also swam on the 4 x 100-meter medley relay team which finished second in the preliminaries. Bernhardt's team had a time of 4:04.58, guaranteeing them a spot in the finals. However, she did not compete in the finals with her team, which finished fourth (4:02.01).
Earlier this week Bernhardt finished sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke preliminaries. Bernhardt, who is representing Germany, touched the wall in 1:09.00 to qualify for the semifinals. Bernhardt finished ninth in the semifinals with a time of 1:09.50, just .25 seconds behind the eighth place qualifying spot.
Bernhardt, a five-time All-American as a freshman, set the school record for the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:00.76 and 2:09.13, respectively during the 2002-03 season.
The women's swimming and diving team kicks off the season Friday, Oct. 17 versus Michigan in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center at 6 p.m.
