The No. 21 University of Florida soccer team defeated Miami 1-0 Saturday morning in an exhibition match held at Cobb Stadium. The match was played as three 30-minute periods.
The Gators scored the only goal of the match in the 47th minute. Ashley Kellgren took a 10-yard shot on the left side, which was deflected by UM goalkeeper Alex Afford. The ball bounced back into the field of play and freshman Amber Presnick scored from six-yards on the right side of the goal.
In the 73rd minute, it looked like senior Megan McMillan scored off a header, but the goal was ruled offsides.
For the match, shots were almost even between the two teams, with UM taking a 13-12 edge. Florida's goakeepers, freshmen Brittni Goodwin and Colleen Donovan split time in the net Saturday. Goodwin recorded four saves and Donovan had three saves. UM's Afford turned in three saves.
"It was a good simulation of an away weekend because we played two matches in three days. The second game is always a bit more challenging because it is in the daytime, which increases the temperature, and sometimes the fatigue factor sets in. We faced a bit of adversity today because our best players didn't play as well as they did on Thursday. But it was good to see us turn it around in the second period. The third period we were able to try a lot of new players and new combinations, which is something we needed to do prior to our opener next Friday," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said.
Florida opens the 2003 season on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:00 p.m. vs. No. 7 Penn State.
