UF Men's Tennis Starts at Southern Intercollegiate

Six members of the University of Florida men's tennis team began the fall season at the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, GA.
Newcomer Martin Stiegward, Trey Johnson and Stephan Tell were all in action in the Division I singles rounds. Stiegward and Johnson played their way into the Round of 32, while Tell received a bye. Stiegward defeated Georgia State's Miha Lisac (6-4, 7-5), before moving on to drop a match to Duke's Ludovic Walter (6-1, 6-3). Johnson did the same with a win over Stetson's Vittorio Fratta in the opening round (7-6 (4), 6-2), as he was defeated by Duke's Johnathan Stokke later in the day (2-6, 6-1, 6-1). Tell was defeated by Georgia's Matia Ormaza (6-2, 6-1). However, he will play in the consolation round tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. against Seth Kelleher of William and Mary.
Three Gators were in action in the Division II singles bracket. Chris Brandi and Ryan Sherry both were unable to make it out of the opening round of play, while Jordan Dolberg received a bye into the Round of 32 as he was defeated by Louisville's Matt Mayer (7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4). Brandi was defeated by Wake Forest's Brett Ross (6-1, 7-6 (6). However, he came back to defeat Stetson's Mario Alberto Cayo, 6-2, 6-4 to advance in the consolation bracket. Ryan Sherry lost his opening match of the day to Peter Rodrigues of Duke (6-2, 6-3). Sherry went on to play against Danie Van Den Heever of Georgia Southern in the consolation round of 32 where things went two sets before the third was decided by a 10-point tie breaker. Sherry won the first 6-2, dropped the second 4-6 and came back to take the tie breaker, 10-7.
