Upset victories over nationally ranked opponents by University of Florida athletes highlighted the second day of action at the Gator Men's Tennis Invitational played at the Ring Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon.
UF freshman Vladimir Obradovic (Belgrade, Serbia), ranked No. 99 in the national collegiate rankings, stunned USF's 27th-ranked Uli Kiendl 6-3, 6-2, while Gator sophomore Stefan Tell (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), unranked in the preseason, controlled USF's 66th-ranked Karim Benmansour in a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
"South Florida looks like a good team so I was pleased with our performances today, especially the job done by Obradovic and Tell," UF head coach Andy Jackson said.
The Gators posted two additional singles victories over USF, as sophomore Jordan Dolberg (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) posted a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Matais Sigal and Ryan Sherry (Ft. Myers, Fla.) downed Juan Barragan 6-3, 6-2.
Florida's Trey Johnson (Gainesville, Fla.) and Martin Stiegwardt (Quito, Ecuador) dropped hard-fought decisions in their respective matches. Johnson fell 7-6, 7-5 to Renato Silveira, while Stiegwardt lost to Federico Barton 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
In doubles action, USF won two of the three matches played against Gator tandems, needing tiebreakers to capture both. UF's pair of Sherry and Tell posted an 8-4 win over German Escallon and Matias Sigal.
Also in action at the Ring Tennis Complex were athletes from Miami and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs opened the day winning both doubles matches, but the Hurricanes dominated singles play, taking four of the five contests.
The final day of action at the Gator Invitational involving all four teams begins Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex. UF and Miami athletes square off, while members from Mississippi State and USF match up. Admission is free.
