Friday, January 16, 2004 | Men's Tennis
The University of Florida men's tennis team began play at the 2004 SEC Indoor Championships Thursday in Athens, GA, as qualifying rounds were held in the singles draw. In all, four Gators were in action as Ryan Sherry came up with a pair of wins to advance into the main singles draw, which begins Friday. In addition, Chris Brandi was one of two who did not win their second match but were selected to continue due to withdraws from the singles bracket.
Sherry began the day with a win over Georgia's Ricardo Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-4 before going on to finish with another straight set victory against Vanderbilt's Greg Sossaman (6-1, 6-1). Florida's Chris Brandi, Jordan Dolberg and Martin Stiegwardt also picked up wins in their first outing before coming up short in matches that determined who qualified. Brandi outlasted Tennessee's Matthew Berry 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (1), while Dolberg went three sets before coming out on top of South Carolina's Pedro Rodrigues (6-3, 3-6, 6-4). Stiegwardt went the same route in his win over Auburn's Brett Hunter (6-3, 3-6, 6-4).
Action is set to resume on Friday at 8 a.m. and doubles play will begin on Saturday.
