University of Florida freshman Lolita Frangulyan advanced to the final round of the 2004 Riviera ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying Tournament by recording a pair of wins Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Frangulyan then teamed with fellow rookie Whitney Benik in doubles action and advanced to the third and final round of that draw.
Frangulyan posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Penn's Julia Koulbitskaya before defeating Nebraska's Enalina Skaza 6-1, 6-3. She faces UCLA's Laura Gordon on Monday for the right to advance to the qualifying draw of the national event that begins Tuesday.
In the 64-team pre-qualifying doubles event, Benik and Frangulyan defeated Rice's squad of DiSesa and Karas 8-1 in the second round. On Monday the Gators play Burke and Nusslock from Wisconsin to try and reach the qualifying draw.
UF freshman Alex Liles won her second round singles match 6-2, 6-3 over Nebraska's Milena Schultz-Gardner, but fell to Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller 6-3, 7-6 (2) in the third round.
UF sophomore Nina Suvak dropped her second round match 6-1, 7-6 (6) to Denver's Yanik Dullens.
The three-day pre-qualifying event ends Monday with eight quarterfinalists advancing into the qualifying draw that begins Oct. 5 at the Riviera Tennis Club. The eight quarterfinalists from that event earn the right to complete in the 32-player main draw of the 2004 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, one of the three national singles and doubles championships played on the collegiate circuit. That event runs Oct. 7-10. UF's Jennifer Magley already has earned an automatic spot in the main draw, while Gators Zerene Reyes and Boglarka Berecz begin action in the qualifying tournament.
