University of Florida men's swimmer Ryan Lochte led the United States 800-meter freestyle relay team to a first-place finish at the 2004 FINA Short Course Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., at Conseco Field House on Friday night.
Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), now a junior, swam the first leg for the relay team and recorded the fastest split of competitor in the field at 1:45.03. The team title gives Lochte his fourth international top-three finish this year, as he won gold and silver medals at the 2004 Olympic Games, while recording a third-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle yesterday at the World Short Course Championships.
Teamed with Chad Carvin, Daniel Ketchum and Justin Mortimer, Lochte and the U.S. team posted a time of 7:03.78, to defeat Australia for the second time this year in this event.
The seventh FINA World Short Course Championships run through Oct. 11, at Conseco Field House and can be seen on ESPN2. Check local listings for air times and dates.
