Men's Tennis Defeats USF, 4-3

The ninth-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team remained perfect against in state opponents as the Gators worked past No. 38 South Florida on Wednesday afternoon in Tampa, 4-3. With the win, Florida improved its record to 8-3 overall. In addition, UF moved to 9-0 under head coach Andy Jackson over teams from inside the Sunshine State. With the loss, USF fell to 6-3 on the season.
UF clinched the critical doubles point when Vladimir Obradovic and Trey Johnson took an 8-3 win on court two over Uli Kiendl and Karim Benmansour and Janne Holmia and Martin Stiegwardt teamed to take an 8-6 decision against Barragan and Federic Barton.
In singles play, USF's Andy Maroldt took a straight set 6-2, 6-0 win over Stiegwardt on six to even things at one. Florida reclaimed the lead when Obradovic came up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Barton on court two. The Gators built the lead to 3-2 with a win on four from Chris Brandi as he scored a 7-6, 6-4 win against Paco Antelo.
With the Gators needing a win on court one or five to get the win, both matches went to third sets. Holmia, playing at the top of the lineup for the second straight outing and the third time this season, broke USF's Uli Kiendl at 4-3 and went on to a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win to give UF the fourth point.
Kiendl was assessed a penalty on the final point of his match which carried over to court five forcing a 5-5 tie between Florida's Ryan Sherry and Benmansour who had led the third set at 5-2. Benmansour held serve and broke to bring things to 4-3 with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 win.
Florida returns home and returns to conference action on Friday, March 19 as the Gators host No. 42 Auburn at 5 p.m.
