Thursday, August 19, 2004 | Soccer
The University of Florida soccer team defeated Akron 4-0 Wednesday evening in an exhibition match held at the Hilton-Sunrise Soccer Field. The match was played as three 30-minute periods. In the preseason rankings released today by SoccerBuzz.com, the Gators hold the No. 6 spot. The complete rankings can be found at the end of this release.
The Gators scored in each of the three periods and Florida newcomers played a hand in each goal. Freshman Jenna Levenson collected the ball just inside midfield and then brought the ball down to the top of the box where she hit a shot to the upper left slot of the goal in the 26th minute. In the second period, Florida scored again in the 53rd minute. Freshman Nikita Waller crossed the ball across the goal where redshirt sophomore Lindsey Affolter one-touched it into the goal.
Florida turned in two goals in the final period. Junior transfer Lindsey DeLorenze hit a 12-foot shot in front of the goal off an Akron deflection in the 62nd minute to give UF a 3-0 lead. Freshman Bianca Gibbs finished the Gator scoring in the 82nd minute when she put Ananda Erickson's deflection off the crossbar into the net.
"After practicing against each other, it was good to face a new opponent. I liked the effort that we saw out there – we got good play throughout the three periods. That high level of play was something we were looking for today. We saw some good things out there today and a few things to work on before the opener next week," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said.
Florida opens the 2004 season on Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:00 p.m. vs. Dayton.
