Orange 2, Blue 0 in Florida Scrimmage
Sunday, August 22, 2004 | Soccer
The Orange defeated the Blue 2-0 in the University of Florida soccer team's scrimmage held Saturday evening at the James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
The match was played as three 30-minute periods, with some players switching teams between sessions. The match was scoreless until the final period, when junior Jen Gardner scored on a corner kick in the 74th minute. Just two minutes later, freshman KeLeigh Hudson added a goal off the cross from fellow freshman Nikita Waller.
"I think everyone is a bit tired due to the end of preseason training. I thought there were stretches that showed some good things. We weren't as opportunistic as we should have been tonight – there definitely could have been some more goals," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "This team is strong all the way through – it will be hard to determine the starting 11. That is a nice problem to have."
The 2004 Gator team features 30 players, including 19 returners from Florida's 2003 team that turned in a 19-4-2 record and reached the NCAA quarterfinal round. The Gators enter the 2004 season appearing on both preseason polls that have been released – No. 6 on SoccerBuzz.com and No. 16 by Soccer America. Florida opens season on Friday, Aug. 27 when it plays host to Dayton at 7 p.m.
