Men?s Tennis Opens Season with Solid Showing at Gator Invite
Friday, September 17, 2004 | Men's Tennis
The University of Florida men's tennis team began its 2004-05 season Friday with a solid showing on the first day at the Gator Invitational. The Gators won all five singles matches they played against Mississippi State, while splitting the two doubles matches contested at Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex.
"It was a nice start for us," UF head coach Andy Jackson said. "Mississippi State is a solid SEC team and we played decent singles against them. Overall, it was a decent start."
Junior Chris Brandi capped a perfect singles day for the Gators, posting a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 victory at the No. 1 position against 110th-ranked Jose-Carlos Pinto.
"I played alright," Brandi said. "For the first match of the year, it was okay. I've never won my first college match of the year before, so I was just happy to win."
Also recording singles wins were junior Stefan Tell, sophomore Martin Stiegwardt and freshmen Nestor Briceno and Grego Ouellette.
"I wasn't surprised (about the results of UF's two freshmen), they're really good," Brandi praised of the Gator rookies. "Anyone could have played the No. 1 spot today. I really think our freshmen are really going to help us a lot this year. College is a little different than Juniors, so once they get used to the style, coaching and things like that, I think they're going to do great."
Briceno defeated Liuz Carvalho 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 2, while Ouellette topped Joshua Irey 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.
"Nestor had a good win against a senior and that's impressive," Jackson said. "We're expecting those two guys to be major contributors this year."
Tell turned in a seady 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jordan Jones, and Stiegwardt won his battle on court No. 3 against Florent Girod, who retired from the match after splitting sets, 4-6, 6-1.
