Women?s Tennis Continues Strong Play at Gator Fall Classic

University of Florida junior Boglarka Berecz highlighted the team's play during the second day of the Gator Fall Classic. Berecz posted her 50th career singles victory, in addition to netting her 40th career doubles win Saturday morning at the Ring Tennis Complex.
Berecz, who improved to 50-8 overall in singles play, dominated her singles match against Florida State's Lindsay Deason, 6-1, 6-0, on court No. 2. The Gator also collected two doubles victories, pairing with UF freshman Whitney Benik for decisive 8-1 win against Miami's Juliette Mavroleon and Caren Seenauth. Berecz then teamed with sophomore Nina Suvak and topped Kentucky's pair of Kim Coventry and Lara Maurer 8-1.
"Today was the best I have seen Boglarka play," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "She was very poised and very confident. She never let Deason in the match. It was an impressive performance."
Berecz won one of five Gators recording singles victories Saturday against their respective Seminole opponents. Freshman Alex Liles had a successful collegiate singles debut, downing Miranda Foley 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 4.
"It was great to see Alex out there," Thornqvist said. "She has a lot of talent and a lot of fight. She's getting healthy and is going to be a huge asset to us."
Liles was equally as excited to be playing.
"I was nervous but it was exciting," Liles said. "I've been injured so it was good just to be out there. The more I played, the better I felt. It was fun. When I went up 5-3 in the first set, I started feeling much better about my game and thought I got stronger as the match went on."
Fellow freshman Lolita Frangulyan won her singles match for the second consecutive day, providing the first UF victory with a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Amber Tantee. The Gator rookie won the final five games to take the match.
Sophomore Nina Suvak out-slugged Tapiwa Marobele 6-1, 6-4 in the baseline battle on court No. 5.
Junior Jennifer Magley rallied from a slow start against Mihaela Moldvan for a 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) victory on the No. 1 court. Magley trailed 4-0 in the opening set before battling back to even the set at 5-all. The next two games were breaks, forcing a tiebreaker, where Magley held one set point at 7-6, but couldn't close it out and Moldvan took the opener. However, the Gator regrouped in the second set and forced a deciding third, which Magley prevailed during the 10-point tiebreak determining the victor.
Gator rookie Whitney Benik lost a tough 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) decision to Roxanne Clarke. With the first set on serve at 3-all, Benik ripped off the next three games to take the opening set. She then began the second set breaking Clarke and road that until the sixth game, where Clarke broke back. The next three games were on-serve before Clarke broke Benik in the 10th game to take the second set and even the match, where the Seminole jumped out to a quick lead in the 10-point tiebreak and never looked back.
"Overall, I was very pleased," Thornqvist said. "I thought everyone played solid with the exception of one of our doubles teams, and they'll get better."
The final day of the Gator Fall Classic begins Sunday at 8 a.m.
