Men's Tennis Dominates Final Day at Gator Invitational
Sunday, September 19, 2004 | Men's Tennis
The University of Florida men's tennis team dominated South Florida during the final day of play at the Gator Invitational Sunday. UF swept all three singles matches and two of the three doubles contests, capping a strong showing during its season-opening tournament.
"I thought we played sharp today," UF head coach Andy Jackson said. "This is the deepest team I've ever coached. When you play three consecutive days in this heat, you expect depth to play a part in your success and it certainly did today."
Freshmen Nestor Briceno and Greg Ouellette capped their inaugural collegiate weekend with perfect 3-0 singles records. On Sunday, Briceno defeated USF's Federico Barton 6-1, 6-1, while Ouellette topped Juan Carlos Gomez, 6-3, 6-1.
Jordan Dolberg, Ryan Sherry, Martin Stiegwardt and Stefan Tell also logged victories and Sunday and each finished the tournament with a 2-0 singles mark.
Sherry was the first Gator off the singles court Sunday, after Matias Sigal retired from injury as Sherry carried a decisive 4-1 lead 15 minutes into the match. Tell finished next, charting a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory against Mark Gattiker.
Dolberg polished off Dillon Brozyna 6-2, 6-4, before Stiegwardt completed the Gator sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Marc Jager on the No. 2 court.
In doubles action, the Gator pair of Vladimir Obradovic and Sherry defeated Juan Carlos Gomez and Matias Sigal 8-3, while the duo of Stiegwardt and Tell received the win against Marc Jager and Andreas Maroldt after the USF pair retired with UF leading 6-2.
The Gators return to action next weekend, traveling to Athens, Ga., for the four-day Southern Intercollegiate that begins Friday morning.
