The second-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2005 dual match season as the Gators defeated UCF on Thursday evening in Gainesville, 7-0. Inclement weather prevented the Gators from completing their Jan. 22 match against Baylor, which was abandoned during the early stages of singles competition. With the win over UCF, Florida has won its past 20 season openers, outscoring its opponents a combined 149-8.
It took the Gators just over 45 minutes to take the doubles point. Florida's 13th-ranked Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes did not surrender a point to UCF's Becky Gordon and Ola Luzak on court two in their 8-0 victory. UF's Alex Liles and Nina Suvak provided the clincher with an 8-4 decision over Megan Hunter and Jennifer Carati. At the top of the lineup, Florida's third-ranked Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan gave the Gators wins on all three courts with their win. The two led UCF's Pamela Fernandez and Kristina Lohmos 6-5 before taking the next two points to stretch the score to 8-5.
Singles was more of the same as Reyes (No. 15) gave the Gators a 2-0 lead when she did not allow Luczak to win a game on court three in a match that lasted 50 minutes (6-0, 6-0).
Freshman Whitney Benik got the Gators within one point of the victory as she came away with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over UCF's Megan Hunter on court five. Liles (No. 105), who is also a newcomer to the squad, provided the clincher as she used the same score one court lower in the lineup to defeat Jennifer Carati.
Junior Jennifer Magley (No. 11) also won in straight sets as she picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lohmos. In her match, Magley was leading the first set 4-2 before she won eight straight games against Lohmos.
UF's 55th-ranked Boglarka Berecz increased the lead to 6-0 when she took a straight ste 6-2, 6-1 win against Fernandez. Frangulyan battled back to give the Gators the shutout. After dropping her first set 3-6, Frangulyan took the second set and won a tiebreak in the third (3-6, 6-3, 10-3)
The Gators remain at home and return to the court on Jan. 29, 2005 as UF takes on Florida International at 1 p.m.
