Saturday, October 1, 2005 | Men's Tennis
The University of Florida men's tennis team capped its three-day participation in its own Gator Invitational winning two of three singles matches Saturday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex. The Hurricanes began the day winning both doubles matches played.
UF seniors Vladimir Obradovic and Stefan Tell both finished the weekend with 3-0 singles records, as each earned victories Saturday.
Mississippi State and Miami conclude the four-day tournament on Sunday beginning with doubles action at 10 a.m.
“Miami is going to be extremely good this year,” UF head coach Andy Jackson said. “They dominated us in doubles and it was pretty close in singles. It was good for us to see what we're going to be up against in the spring season. We were exposed to a certain degree and that's good for us. We will work on improving and continue to get better.”
Obradovic defeated Tim Krebs 7-6 (2), 6-4 to end his run at the event undefeated. Tell topped Eric Hechtman 7-5, 6-4, overcoming a 5-2 deficit in the first set and eventually capping the match with an ace.
“Vlad (Obradovic) had a really good weekend,” Jackson said. “I was pleased with the way he played and competed. Stefan (Tell) had a solid win today which is real good for his confidence.”
UF freshman Shaun Young dropped a tough 6-2, 7-6 (5) decision to Vivek Subramanian.
“It was good for Shaun to get some matches under his belt,” Jackson.
Florida returns to the courts next week for the ITA All-American Championships, considered the first of the collegiate Grand Slams, which begin October 2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
