Men's Swimming & Diving Fall To Texas And California

The University of Florida Men's Swimming & Diving team fell to Texas and California on Saturday during the final day of a tri-meet at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Golden Bears won with a score of 247-123, while host Texas earned a 243-127 victory.
Freshman Bradley Ally (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won Florida's first swimming event of the competition in the 400 IM. Ally raced to a personal-best time of 3:54.38, which was also the team's best time this season. Sophomore Kevin Nead (Ithaca, N.Y.) placed second for the Gators with a personal-best time of 3:55.68. Sophomore Dustin McLarty (DeLand, Fla.) and sophomore Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.) placed sixth and seventh respectively in the event.
The 200 MR team of sophomore Darian Townsend (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa), junior Bill Mrazek (Tallahassee, Fla.), senior Nick Borreca (Honolulu, Hawaii) and sophomore Daniel Penniman (Pensacola, Fla.) improved on last week's performance by recording a time of 1:33.33. The time was the foursome's best this season and was good enough to finish sixth. California's team of David Russell, Henrique Barbosa, Jernej Godec and Jonas Tilly won the event in a time of 1:30.21. Texas claimed second and third with times of 1:31.37 and 1:31.86.
“We were better in everything today.” Head coach Gregg Troy said. “I don't think we swam as well as we could have yesterday, and today we swam more on par with what we can do. It was a pretty tough trip with a full day racing yesterday. We still have some work to do. Those were two tough teams we faced.”
Townsend went on to place second in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:37.92. Senior Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.) also topped his season-best time on Saturday by clocking a 1:40.49 in the event to place fifth.
In the diving competition, Bailey Gao of Texas won his second event of the competition, the one-meter springboard. Gao complied a score of 332.45. Florida freshman Jonathan Wilcox (Bellevue, Wash.) placed second with a score of 271.60 and junior Justin Schmidt (Falcon, Col.) earned a second-place finish with a score of 271.55.
Florida drops to an overall record of 2-2 (1-0 SEC). Both the men and women swimming & diving teams return to the pool on Thursday, Oct. 27 for a dual meet versus SEC rival Georgia at Athens, Ga. Complete results from Saturday's meet can be found at www.gatorzone.com.
