Lady Gators Improve Two Spots at Auburn Derby
Saturday, November 5, 2005 | Women's Golf
In round two action at the Auburn Derby, the University of Florida women's golf team improved on its day one eighth-place standing, to sit in sixth going into the final round of play at the par 72, 6,270 yard Auburn University Club.
Sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) moved up from a tie at 19th to a tie for 13th, with a 74 effort in round two to head into day three with a 149 (+5). Sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) shot a 75 (+3) on the day to hold at her day one finish in a tie for 13th. Myers enters the final round of play with a 149 (+5). Head coach Jill Briles-Hinton was pleased to see Gal take the lead for the Lady Gators.
“Sandra was our low scorer today, she had a great round,” said Briles-Hinton. “She's a talented golfer, and 74 should be the highest she shoots in any tournament. She's working hard to improve everyday and it's showing.”
Sophomore captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar) started out the second round shooting a +5, 41 on the back nine, but managed an even 36 on the front to finish with a 77. Chudy moved up six places from her day one finish in a tie for 34th to head into the second round in a tie for 28th with a 153 (76-77).
Redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) improved three strokes in round two from her day one score of 79. With her second round 76 Jouven moved up 15 spots to a tie for 41st to head into the final round with a 155 (79-76). Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) shot a 79 in round two to finish in a tie for 47th and head into the final round with a 156 (77-79). Briles-Hinton was pleased to see the team translating aspects of its daily practice into tournament results.
“I like to see the team grouping their numbers together,” said Briles-Hinton. “We work a lot in practice teaching them how to mentally focus on getting their scores together when they're playing in tournaments.”
In the team standings Duke took the lead from host Auburn, with a 294 effort on the day. Auburn sits in second place after shooting a 302 in round two, and Tennessee claimed a day two finish in third with a 297. Georgia sits in fourth (599) heading into the final round, while Virginia rounds out the top five with a 306 effort on the day. The Orange and Blue notched a day two 302, to head into the final round with a 604 (+14).
Duke, Tennessee and Florida were the only three teams in the top six to maintain their day one score, as the other three teams added strokes in the second round. Briles-Hinton noted the Lady Gators' 302 in round two was more impressive than shooting the same score in round one.
“We shot the same score as yesterday, which means we're being consistent,” said Briles-Hinton. “The conditions were more difficult today than in round one, and although we shot the same number two days in a row, we did improve.”
“Ball placement on the greens is still important if we want to improve even more in the third round,” Briles-Hinton continued. “The dormant grass makes for fast greens, and that's a detail we have to pay attention to.”
The Lady Gators return to action with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Sunday morning at the Auburn University Club for the third and final round of the Derby.
