W-Tennis: Srebrovic & Frangulyan Claim Singles Titles
Sunday, November 6, 2005 | Women's Tennis
University of Florida sophomores Diana Srebrovic and Lolita Frangulyan captured tennis singles titles at their respective tournaments on Sunday during the final weekend of the fall season.
Srebrovic, ranked No. 34 in the country, upset Stanford's 12th-ranked and No. 8-seeded Theresa Logar 7-5, 6-4 to capture the ITA National Indoor Championships title, becoming the fourth Gator in history to claim this national championship, joining legends Lisa Raymond, who won the crown in 1992, Nicole Arendt (1990) and Halli Cioffi (1988). This is the 12th overall collegiate Grand Slam singles title won by a Gator, and the first since Jessica Lehnhoff captured the 2001 Riviera All-American Championship.
Srebrovic found herself trailing 5-3 in the opening set, but battled back to win the next five games to take the set and the first game of the second en route to the straight set win.
“Diana started a little tentative, but did a great job of staying composed during that first set and pulled it out,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “The second set was an all-out battle, with both of them really banging and not giving anything away. Entering this tournament we talked about how to prepare and how to compete. Diana was awesome in both respects. I'm speechless when I think about how she handled herself during this tournament and her improvement this fall.”
Srebrovic, who knocked off three top-15 ranked singles opponents during her five-match title run, concludes the fall season with an impressive 17-2 singles record, with both losses coming to top-10 ranked opponents.
Also bringing home a tournament trophy on Sunday was Lolita Frangulyan, who captured her first career singles title, defeating Vanderbilt's Courtney Ulery 6-4, 6-1 for the SEC Coaches Fall Classic B Division title on Sunday at the Peachtree Tennis Center.
“Lolita played really well this tournament,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “She's been working so hard in practice and it's great to see her come away as a champion at this tournament. She's moving better on the court and her confidence is growing. We came away from this tournament with a championship and that always feels good.”
In non-draw action, UF's Nina Suvak, the No. 3-seed, defeated Arkansas' No. 2-seeded Vlatka Jovanovic 6-3, 6-4 in her match Sunday, to conclude the fall season on a positive note. Whitney Benik wasn't as fortunate, losing a straight set decision to Vanderbilt's No. 1-seeded Taka Bertrand. In doubles action, Benik and Suvak paired to defeat Ole Miss' Ilona Somers and Virginia Tomatis 8-6.
