No. 2 Women's Tennis Loses at No. 5 Kentucky, 5-2
Sunday, March 13, 2005 | Women's Tennis
The No. 2-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team lost to No. 6 Kentucky 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. The loss, which comes just 48 hours after Friday's setback at No. 5 Vanderbilt, marks the first time the Gators (6-2, 2-2 SEC) have dropped consecutive regular season matches since the 1985-86 season.
“Even though we lost, we played much better than we did on Friday,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “I'm proud of how we fought harder, especially our younger players. We just got outplayed today by a much more skilled indoor team. They played aggressively when they need to and got the job done.”
For the second straight match, Florida won the doubles point, Sunday earning victories on courts No. 2 and 3, but it was on the singles court where the Gators struggled. Kentucky captured five of the six singles matches, with freshman Whitney Benik providing the lone Gator win. Benik topped Joell Schwenk 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on the No. 4 court. She also paired with Lolita Franguylan at No. 2 doubles and provided the clinching doubles point after the duo of Alex Liles and Nina Suvak won at No. 3.
Sunday's contest concluded a five-match road trip for the Gators, who next begin a four-match home stand playing host to No. 11 North Carolina on Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m. College Women's Tennis
