Saturday, March 5, 2005 | Women's Tennis
The second-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team swamped LSU 7-0 at the W.T. Robinson Center in the Southeastern Conference opener for both squads. The Gators finally were able to record a decision in a match for the first time since February 21st, as their previous two contests were rained out.
Florida (5-0, 1-0 SEC), which improved to 30-0 all-time against the Lady Tigers (6-3, 0-1 SEC), posted its 32nd consecutive regular season victory.
The Gators started quick, sweeping the three doubles matches to claim the first team point of the contest. UF's No. 3 pair of Alex Liles and Nina Suvak captured the inaugural decision of the day, downing Camila Caliari and Marina Chiarelli 8-1. The victory was Suvak's 50th career doubles win. Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes secured the doubles point with an 8-3 decision on the No. 1 court, before Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan took the win on court No. 2 to complete the sweep.
Florida took care of business almost as quickly on the singles courts, where Alex Liles, Whitney Benik and Zerene Reyes won their respective matches on courts 4, 5 and 2 to claim the dual match and capture the Gators' initial league victory.
Shortly after Reyes secured the clinching dual match point, junior Jennifer Magley topped Amanda Mang 7-5, 6-0 on the No. 1 court to post the 80th singles victory of her career and improve to 50-4 all-time in dual match singles action. Nina Suvak then won her No. 5 match before Boglarka Berecz completed the sweep by winning at third set super-tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot.
Florida continues its five-match road swing on Sunday, when the Gators travel to Arkansas for a 1 p.m. ET match.
