Women's Tennis Defeats No. 25 Tennessee, 5-2

The ninth-ranked University of Florida women’s tennis team continued its winning ways on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over No. 25 Tennessee (12-6, 5-3 SEC).
The Gators (12-2, 6-2 SEC) regrouped after Friday’s thrilling 4-3 victory over third-ranked Georgia, starting slowly before taking the doubles point to begin the match with a 1-0 lead.
“Friday’s win (over No. 3 Georgia) definitely had an effect on our play today,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “The beginning of the match was not pretty but somehow we battled our way through doubles and found a way to get the doubles point. We were able to close the door in singles and I’m proud of that.”
The doubles team of Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak clinched the doubles point with a 9-8 decision at the No. 3 position after Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes earned the win at No. 1 after the Gators dropped the No. 2 spot.
In singles play, Tennessee tied up the dual match with Victoria Jones’ win over UF sophomore Nina Suvak, who was playing a career-high No. 3 position in the lineup. The Lady Vols then took the lead with a victory at the No. 6 spot, but that’s all the home team would notch, as Zerene Reyes defeated Blakeley Griffith 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 2. Whitney Benik followed with a victory on court No. 4, before Jennifer Magley clinched UF’s sixth consecutive victory. Junior Boglarka Berecz the polished off the victory claiming the win on court No. 5.
The Gators return to action on Friday, April 8, when the team plays host to Mississippi State beginning at 5 p.m. That match launches UF’s regular-season ending three-match stretch, with all three of those matches played at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
