The seventh-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team won its seventh consecutive dual match, defeating No. 22 Mississippi State, 6-1, Friday evening at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
The Gators (13-2, 7-2 SEC) improved their impressive home record against Southeastern Conference teams to 123-1 all-time, as they moved to 25-0 against the Lady Bulldogs (11-4, 5-4 SEC), and kept their hopes of an SEC East Division title still alive.
Florida returns to action on Sunday, playing host to Ole Miss beginning at 1 p.m.
"We played much better doubles tonight than we did last weekend so I was pleased with that improvement," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "Jennifer (Magley) and Zerene (Reyes) had a great win at No. 1 doubles today against MSU's team that had just one loss. Overall, I thought we had some solid wins and some other wins where we gutted it out and found a way to get the job done."
The final match completed was the most exciting, as UF junior Jennifer Magley, ranked sixth in the country, rallied for a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) victory over 18th-ranked Zsuzsanna Fodor on court No. 1. Magley trailed 7-4 in the 10-point super-tiebreaker, down three mini-breaks before staging her comeback and claim her fourth win this season over a top-25 foe. The first set featured seven service breaks, with Fodor actually able to hold on the 12th game to take the opening frame before Magley dominated the second set.
Senior Zerene Reyes ripped past Anastasia Kugakolova on court No. 2, needing just 45 minutes to claim the 6-0, 6-0 victory, posting her second double-bagel this season and the fifth of her career. Reyes won the opening set in 24 minutes and claimed the second in 21, cruising to her 95th career singles victory.
Nina Suvak was the next Gator off the court, topping Renee Joseph 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Suvak, who was one of three Gators assessed a one-game delay penalty at the start of singles play, regrouped quickly by opening play with a break and then two others to take the first set. Suvak lost her serve to begint the second, but got back on serve with a break in the fourth and then earned another in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. She then held at love to win the straight set decision.
Boglarka Berecz then captured the dual match point with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 spot against Polina Kokoulina. Berecz cruised in her first set, needing 24 minutes to claim the opening frame. But Kokoulina continued to battle and held in the first game of the second set to get on the board. She then broke Berecz in the fourth game, but the Gator junior broke right back and then won the final five games en route to her 40th career dual match victory.
Freshman Alex Liles polished off her win at No. 5 versus Magdi Rekasi, 6-1, 6-1. Liles also was assessed a one-game penalty to start the match, but one it began, it was all Gator. There were several long rallies and duces, but Liles won the big points, earning seven breaks during the match, including one in the final game of the contest.
In doubles action, the Gators swept all three positions, with the pair of Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak posting a quick 39-minute victory at the No. 3 spot. Florida then captured the doubles point on court No. 1, where the 12th-ranked duo of Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes defeated MSU's 13th-ranked tandem of Zsuzsanna Fodor and Anastasia Kugakolova 8-2 in 50 minutes of play. In that match, the Gators opened with a break before Magley held at love, as UF took the early 2-0 lead. Magley and Reyes then posted breaks during the fourth and seventh games en route to the win and improve their career record together to 78-19, the second most wins by a doubles team in UF history.
