The seventh-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 7-0 sweep against Ole Miss (11-8, 4-6 SEC) Sunday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
"Ole Miss gave us everything we could handle, but I was proud of our effort on every court," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "We continued to battle every point and play hard. We never backed down and kept fighting, so I was pleased that we stepped up. I see improvement every match and that's what you want to happen late in the season."
The Gators (14-2, 8-2 SEC) swept all six singles positions and won two of three doubles matches en route to their eighth consecutive win and improved to 124-1 all-time at home against Southeastern Conference opponents.
Florida plays its regular season finale next Sunday, April 17, entertaining No. 25 South Carolina beginning at 1 p.m. Zerene Reyes, UF's lone senior, will be recognized prior to the match.
Freshman Whitney Benik was the first Gator off the singles court, claiming the No. 4 position with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Virginia Tomatis. The first set featured six service breaks, with Benik claiming four of those, including one in the final game to take the opening frame. The Gator rookie then took charge of the second set, earning a break in the fourth game en route to a quick 4-1 lead and then earned another break in the eighth and the final game of the contest.
Boglarka Berecz then captured the No. 5 position 6-2, 7-6 over Mimi Renaudin. After breaking Renaudin's final two service games of the first set, Berecz claimed the opening frame but found herself trailing early in the second after dropping her serve to begin the set. She broke Renaudin in the fourth game before holding a love to even the match. But Berecz lost her serve again in the seventh game and wasn't able to break back until the 10th game, preventing Renaudin from serving out the set. Berecz held and then broke the Lady Rebel again to earn the straight set victory.
Zerene Reyes won her seventh consecutive singles match after defeating Nika Koukhartchouk 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 2 and clinching the dual match. Reyes methodically ran the Lady Rebel back and forth along the baseline earning breaks in the first, third and seventh games to take the opening set. Koukhartchouk held to begin the second set, but Reyes held and won the remaining games to close out the match.
Junior Jennifer Magley also posted her seventh straight singles win, topping Chloe Carlotti on court No. 1. Magley opened the match breaking Carlotti at love and started to flirt with a double-bagel after winning the first nine games of the match, taking a 3-0 lead in the second behind a pair of breaks. But Carlotti finally got on the board by breaking Magley's next two service games to get the set back on serve. But Magley stormed back by breaking Carlotti in the ninth game at love then held to close out the win in straight sets.
Freshman Alex Liles recovered from a slow start on court No. 6, where she defeated Preethi Subramanian 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. The match began with consecutive breaks of serve, but Liles lost her serve again in the fifth game before breaking back in the eighth. However, Subramanian took Liles' next serve and then held to claim the first set. Liles then settled down and ripped off the next 11 games before Subramanian was able to hold in the sixth game of the second set. But Liles was too strong and served out the final game and improve to 3-1 this season in thee-set matches.
Sophomore Nina Suvak posted her first career victory at the No. 3 position, where she defeated Ilona Somers 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 (10-5). Suvak, who was playing a career-high spot in the lineup for the second time, overcame four service breaks in the first set to force a tiebreaker, where she rallied from down one mini-break to win the opening frame after her backhand lob capped the tiebreak on her second opportunity. The second set began with consecutive breaks before Somers landed the only other break of the set in the fifth game, riding that to force a deciding third, which was played as a 10-point super-tiebreaker since UF already had clinched the dual match. Suvak jumped out early in the super-tiebreaker, earning a mini-break on the second point before taking another on the sixth point to take a 5-1 lead. Somers broke the 13th point, but Suvak came right back to take the final two points of the match off Somers' serve to capture the win.
The Gators claimed the doubles point by winning the first two matches completed, before Ole Miss took the No. 1 spot to avoid the sweep. UF's pair of Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak posted the initial victory of the contest, defeating Nika Koukhartchouk and Preethi Subramanian 8-2. The Gator rookie tandem of Whitney Benik and Alex Liles then provided the clinching point with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 spot against Mimi Renaudin and Ilona Somers in a match that featured six service breaks, including the final two of the match. The No. 1 position was fiercely contested and ended in a disspointing fashion for UF, as Jennifer Magley's double fault ended the thrilling contest with Ole Miss taking the 8-6 decision.
