Tuesday, April 5, 2005 | Men's Golf
University of Florida junior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) has been selected for the second consecutive year to represent the United States in the 2005 Palmer Cup presented by Monster.
The lone returnee from the 2004 U.S. Palmer Cup team, Every was a first-team PING All-America and All-SEC selection last season. Every won the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate - the third victory of his career - this spring and has five top 10 finishes this season. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Public Links and qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Every ranks fifth at Florida in career wins and ninth in top-10 finishes.
Leading the 2005 U.S. Palmer Cup team in their quest to regain the coveted prize will be Florida Head Coach Buddy Alexander.
Alexander, a 2002 inductee into the GCAA Hall of Fame, directed one of the greatest seasons in Gator Golf history in 2003-04. Under Alexander's leadership, the Gators won seven of 14 tournaments and never finished outside the top six in any event during the season. The seven wins was the second-most in school history, while the 14 top-10 finishes matched a school record. Florida racked up 13 consecutive top-five finishes to set the standard for top five finishes in a season, as well as consecutive top five finishes. The Gators earned two PING first-team All-American honors in Every and Camilo Villegas, while Jessie Mudd and Brett Stegmaier earned honorable mention recognition.
The three-time and 2004 Eaton Golf Pride Dave Williams Coach of the Year, Alexander earned his seventh Eaton Golf Pride Southeast Region/District Coach of the Year while garnering his seventh Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year distinction.
New Mexico's Spencer Levin, Jeff Overton of Indiana and Pepperdine's Michael Putnam will join Every on the squad, while the remaining U.S. Palmer Cup team members will be named on Tuesday, April 12.
The annual Ryder Cup-style competition between American collegiate golfers and their counterparts from Europe will be played June 8-9 on the 7,201 yard, par 72 Whistling Straits Irish Course. Team USA leads the series, 4-3-1.
