Florida Men's Tennis Defeats No. 15 Mississippi State, 7-0

The seventh-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team stretched its win streak to 11 matches as the Gators came away with an 7-0 victory at No. 15 Mississippi
State on Friday afternoon. With the win, UF improved to 16-4 on the season and 9-0 in the SEC. The Bulldogs fell to 11-6 and 6-3 in the league. The shutout was the fifth against a SEC opponent under head coach Andy Jackson and the second against the Bulldogs.
The match was a return to Starkville for Jackson who came to Gainesville from MSU where he coached the men's team from 1989-2001. With the win, Jackson moved to 4-0 all-time against his former school.
Florida won the doubles point for the first time in the three outings and the 11th time on the season. UF's Nestor Briceno and Stefan Tell paired on court three and came away with an 8-6 win over Ivan Bjelica and Pier Mouillon. The win was the second on the season for the duo that was appearing in their third dual match of the season.
Moments later, UF's 22nd-ranked Hamid Mirzadeh and Greg Ouellette got the point for the Gators when they took an 8-4 decision over No. 37 Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto bringing the Florida pair to 7-6 on the season on the top court. The victory was also the third over a ranked opponent for Florida's tandem.
In singles play, UF players posted wins in all of the first sets. Ryan Sherry increased the lead to 2-0 in Florida's favor with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Girod on court six. The win was his 11th consecutive and 16th in the last 18 outings.
Briceno, who reentered the singles rankings at No. 124 this week picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win on court four to get UF to within one of clinching the match. Ouellette (No. 37) got the win the Gators were looking for on court two with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Phillippe Frayssinoux. The win was his 11th straight as well as the UF newcomer improved to 32-6 overall on the season.
Brandi, ranked 85th, made it 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Pinto for his ninth win in the last 10 outings. Moments later, Obradovic outlasted Mouillon on court three, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 (8) to end the Bulldog rookie's 10-match win streak.
Mirzadeh, who climbed to No. 30 in this week's ITA poll, closed out the match and got the Gators the shutout by holding off Bjelica, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (11) on the top court.
UF closes out the weekend of play at No. 4 Ole Miss on Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m.
