The University of Florida men's golf team fired a three-over par opening round score of 287 at the 2005 NCAA East Regional Golf Tournament hosted by The Golf Club of Tennessee. No. 17 Wake Forest sits atop the weather-shortened first round after firing a 13-under par score of 271.
"Today we didn't play our best golf," Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "No one played particularly well and as a team we didn't hit the ball like we are capable of."
Leading the Gators was the junior duo of Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) as they fired even par scores of 71 on the 6,864-yard course. The tandem is currently tied for 37th-place, trailing Kyle Reifers from Wake Forest the first round leader by six strokes.
Junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) was right on his teammates heels as he recorded a one-over par score of 72 to sit in a tie for 54th-place when play was suspended due to darkness.
Redshirt senior Duke Butler (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) notched a two-over par opening round score of 73 to sit in 67th-place when play was halted due to darkness.
Despite an early triple bogey, redshirt senior Richard Treis (Baden-Baden, Germany) did not let his round get away from him as he recorded a three-over par tally of 74. Treis' efforts placed him in a tie for 78th-place when play was suspended due to darkness.
The remainder of the opening round will be completed in the morning and will not affect the start of the second round. All second round tee times will begin as scheduled with the first Gator teeing off at 7:12 a.m. on the 10th-hole.
The 2005 NCAA East Regional will continue tomorrow through Saturday, May 21 at The Golf Club of Tennessee.
