WTennis: Magley & Reyes Win NCAA First Round Singles Matches
Monday, May 23, 2005 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes won their respective first round matches at the NCAA Singles Championships that began Monday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Reyes had no trouble in her NCAA singles debut, needing just 53 minutes to dispose of USF's Neyssa Etienne 6-0, 6-0 and notch the seventh double-bagel of her career.
"(Etienne) was missing a lot and all I had to do was hit high and hard to her backhand," Reyes said. "I was surprised with how easily I won because I've know her for so many years. I kept waiting for (the match) to get harder, but I'll take it."
Magley's match against Stanford's Whitney Deason was completely the opposite in every respect. The match lasted three hours and one minute, with the Gator junior staging an improbable comeback to earn the 7-6 (9), 5-7, 6-4 victory. Magley was receiving, down 4-0 in the third set before digging deep and winning the final six games, including serving out a love in the finale to advance to the second round.
"Today I had no type of mental toughness or physical toughness, my body was going wacky and my mind was really immature," Magley shared. "But I was able to come through with my belief in Christ. I have no explanation for how I came back because it was very sloppy tennis. Deason's a great player. I just was able to draw from my faith. She made more errors toward the end and I made my serve a lot more. Getting my first serve in and getting the ball out of the middle really helped."
Magley faces San Diego's Emma Murphy in the second round on Tuesday at 10 a.m., while Reyes takes on Stanford's Alice Barnes at 11:30 a.m.
The two also pair on Tuesday for the opening round of the NCAA Doubles Championships, playing Georgia Tech's 17th-ranked team of Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio.
Joining Magley and Reyes in the 32-team doubles field are UF's freshmen pair of Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan, who earned a 5-8 seeding, and face Harvard's 33rd-ranked pair of Melissa Anderson and Celia Durkin.
This is Magley's second appearance in the 64-player singles draw, as she reached the Round of 16 last year before falling to Miami's Megan Bradley, currently the No. 1-seed in the NCAA draw. Reyes, a senior, is making her NCAA Singles Championships debut. She was selected to the 2003 field, but withdrew prior to the start due to injury.
Magley and Reyes did team in the 2003 NCAA Doubles Championships, where the tandem advanced to the semifinals. They were listed as the second alternate team in the 2004 draw, but did not get a chance to compete. Magley and Reyes, currently ranked ninth in the national doubles listings, entering the NCAA Team Championships semifinal match with an 84-20 doubles record as a team, the second most wins in UF doubles history.
The freshmen pair of Benik and Frangulyan first played together at the Riviera/ITA All-American Doubles Championships in October 2004, where they defeated six consecutive ranked opponents en route to the title, emerging from the two qualifying tournaments and winning 10 matches in nine days to claim the title. They won three matches before falling in the final round of pre-qualifying on Monday, Oct. 4, but were selected as lucky losers into qualifying due to a late withdrawal. In qualifying they won three matches to reach the main draw, where they strung together four victories over top-20 ranked tandems. Benik and Frangulyan have compiled a 22-8 record together this season, but have not played together since April 3rd.
Florida has won the NCAA Singles title four times: Shaun Stafford (1988), Lisa Raymond (1992 & 1993) & Jill Craybas (1996); while also capturing four NCAA Doubles crowns: Jillian Alexander & Nicole Arendt (1991), Dawn Buth & Stephanie Nickitas (1996 & '97) and Whitney Laiho & Jessica Lehnhoff (2001).
